DiCamillo pursued an English degree at the University of Florida, Gainesville, graduating in 1987 after a brief stint at the University of Central Florida.
After graduation, DiCamillo worked various jobs in Clermont before moving to Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1994, where she initially worked in a book warehouse.
Her breakthrough came with the acceptance of her first book, Because of Winn-Dixie, which prompted her to become a full-time author.

Her distinguished contributions have garnered numerous accolades, with two of her books, The Tale of Despereaux and Flora & Ulysses, winning the prestigious Newbery Medal.
From 2014 to 2015, DiCamillo served as the American National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature, advocating for the unifying power of stories.
Residing in Minneapolis, she remains an active writer with her upcoming novel, Ferris, set to be published on March 5th, 2024.
DiCamillo’s literary prowess has earned her multiple awards, including the Josette Frank Award, Dorothy Canfield Fisher Children’s Book Award, and the National Book Award for Young People’s Literature.
