Britta Teckentrup biography

Britta Teckentrup is a children’s author and illustrator. She was born in Hamburg, Germany, grew up in Wuppertal, and moved to London in 1988 to study illustration and fine art. Her art education included St Martin’s College and the Royal College of Art.

Her work is mainly for young readers, including picture books, board books, poetry collections and illustrated non-fiction. She has written and illustrated books in the Peek-Through Picture Book series, including Tree, Bee, Ocean, Moon and Home. Her other books include Big Smelly Bear, Grumpy Cat, The Odd One Out, Don’t Wake Up Tiger! and Get Out Of My Bath!

Teckentrup has also illustrated books by other writers. Her collaborations include Neon Leon, Firefly Home and Leap Frog by Jane Clarke, and When I Became Your Brother by Susannah Shane. She illustrated Tiger, Tiger, Burning Bright!, an animal-poetry anthology selected by Fiona Waters and published by Nosy Crow in 2020.

Her illustration work has included television-related children’s projects for Teletubbies and Tweenies. The House by the Lake by Thomas Harding, illustrated by Teckentrup, was longlisted for a Kate Greenaway Medal. Don’t Wake Up Tiger! won the Dutch Picture Book of the Year award in its Dutch edition, Ssst! De tijger slaapt.

Her recent and forthcoming books include There Are Birds Everywhere, a non-fiction book published by Big Picture Press in 2024, A Happy Place, published on 6 February 2024 by Tiger Tales, and The Chairs, scheduled for publication by Prestel Junior on 8 September 2026.
