Sophie Blackall is an Australian-born artist and author renowned for her contributions to children’s literature. She has illustrated over 50 books, including the best-selling Ivy and Bean series by Annie Barrows. Her work has earned her two Caldecott Medals: in 2016 for Finding Winnie: The True Story of the World’s Most Famous Bear and in 2019 for Hello Lighthouse, which she also wrote.
Born in Melbourne in 1970, Blackall earned a Bachelor of Design from the University of Technology Sydney in 1992. She began her career painting robotic characters for theme parks and writing a household hints column. In 2000, she relocated to Brooklyn, New York, after winning a diversity visa lottery, and soon began illustrating children’s books. Her first illustrated book, Ruby’s Wish by Shirin Yim Bridges, won the Ezra Jack Keats Award in 2003.
Blackall’s illustrations have appeared in major publications, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and Vogue. She has collaborated with authors such as Jacqueline Woodson, Meg Rosoff, and Rukhsana Khan. Her own authored works include The Baby Tree (2014), If You Come to Earth (2020), and Things to Look Forward To (2022).
In 2022, Blackall released Farmhouse, a picture book inspired by a real family who once lived in a farmhouse she purchased. The book features mixed-media illustrations incorporating materials salvaged from the actual house. Her dedication to authenticity and detail is evident throughout her work.
Beyond her books, Blackall has contributed to global health and literacy initiatives with organizations such as UNICEF and Save the Children. She was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 2022 for her significant service to children’s literature.
