Shing.Yin Khor biography

Shing Yin Khor is a cartoonist and installation artist whose work explores the Americana mythos, new human rituals, personal narrative and collaborative worldbuilding.

Their graphic memoir The American Dream?: A Journey on Route 66 Discovering Dinosaur Statues, Muffler Men, and the Perfect Breakfast Burrito was published on 6 August 2019 by Lerner Publishing Group. The book follows Khor’s solo journey along Route 66 from Santa Monica to Chicago and develops from a road trip into a search for an American landscape shaped by shifting ideas of belonging.

Khor wrote and illustrated The Legend of Auntie Po, a 304-page graphic historical fiction novel published by Kokila on 15 June 2021 for readers aged 10 to 14. The story is set in a late-19th-century Sierra Nevada logging camp, where 13-year-old Mei reimagines the Paul Bunyan legend through stories about Po Pan Yin, known as Auntie Po, an elderly Chinese matriarch with a blue water buffalo.

The Legend of Auntie Po was a National Book Award finalist and won the 2021 Eisner Award for Best Publication for Teens. Khor also wrote What Made California the Golden State?: Life During the Gold Rush, a 64-page Who HQ graphic novel illustrated by Kass Gray and published on 2 April 2024.
