Sally Warner is an American author and artist who writes fiction for children and young adults, as well as nonfiction books about art and creativity. She grew up in Connecticut and California and later studied at Scripps College and Otis Art Institute, earning degrees in fine arts.
Before publishing fiction for young readers, Warner worked as a visual artist and taught art education at college level. Her adult nonfiction books include Encouraging the Artist in Your Child, Encouraging the Artist in Yourself, and Making Room for Art.
Warner’s first children’s novels included Dog Years, Some Friend, and Ellie and the Bunheads. She later wrote books for older children and young adults, including Sort of Forever, How to Be a Real Person (in Just One Day), Twilight Child, and Finding Hattie.
Her chapter-book series for younger readers include the Lily books, the Emma books, the EllRay Jakes series, and the Absolutely Alfie series. Only Emma introduced Emma McGraw, while EllRay Jakes Is Not a Chicken began the EllRay Jakes sequence in 2011.
Warner’s books have been published by major children’s imprints including Knopf, Viking, HarperCollins, and Penguin Random House. The Absolutely Alfie series includes Absolutely Alfie and the First Week Friends, Absolutely Alfie and the Furry, Purry Secret, Absolutely Alfie and the Worst Best Sleepover, and Absolutely Alfie and The Princess Wars.
