Recommended reading books for elementary, middle & high school students
Sally M. Walker writes nonfiction books for children, with more than sixty children’s books published. Her work includes science and nature titles, historical nonfiction, picture books and board books for young readers.
Walker has a degree in geology, and that subject background has informed books about earth science and natural processes. Her science-related titles include Earth Verse: Haiku from the Ground Up, Out of This World: Star-Studded Haiku, Trees: Haiku from Roots to Leaves and the Nature in Action board-book series.
Secrets of a Civil War Submarine won the Robert F. Sibert Medal. Boundaries: How the Mason-Dixon Line Settled a Family Feud and Divided a Nation was published on 8 April 2014 for readers aged 12 and was longlisted for the YALSA Award for Excellence in Nonfiction.
Her historical nonfiction also includes Sinking the Sultana: A Civil War Story of Imprisonment, Greed, and a Doomed Journey Home, published on 14 November 2017 for readers aged 10. The book won the Virginia Library Association Jefferson Cup Award.
Walker wrote Underground Fire: Hope, Sacrifice, and Courage in the Cherry Mine Disaster, a children’s nonfiction account connected to the Cherry Mine disaster. She also contributed to 1789: Twelve Authors Explore a Year of Rebellion, Revolution, and Change, published on 6 October 2020 for readers aged 12.
For younger readers, Walker wrote River’s Journey, illustrated by Kim Smith, in the Nature in Action series; it was published on 8 April 2025. Cora’s Beach Adventure, illustrated by Julie Kwon and part of the STEAM Street Kids series, is scheduled for publication on 7 July 2026.
