Robert Sabuda is a children’s book creator known for pop-up paper engineering. His books include Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, The Twelve Days of Christmas, The Night Before Christmas, Winter’s Tale, Peter Pan and Beauty and the Beast.
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, illustrated by Robert Sabuda and published by Little Simon on 1 October 2000, is a pop-up version created for the 100th anniversary of L. Frank Baum’s original book. The edition uses a shortened version of Baum’s text and artwork in the style of W. W. Denslow.
Sabuda worked with Matthew Reinhart on the Encyclopedia Prehistorica series. Encyclopedia Prehistorica: Dinosaurs was written by Matthew Reinhart and Robert Sabuda and illustrated by Robert Sabuda and Matthew Reinhart; the book presents dinosaurs through six spreads with large pop-ups, smaller pop-up booklets and text.
Sabuda and Reinhart also created Encyclopedia Prehistorica: Sharks and Other Sea Monsters and the Encyclopedia Mythologica books. Sabuda’s other pop-up books include America the Beautiful, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
Chanukah Lights, written by Michael J. Rosen and illustrated by Robert Sabuda, was published on 27 September 2011 for readers aged 5 to 9. The book uses Sabuda’s pop-ups to show each night’s menorah in a different setting, including desert tents, olive trees and a city panorama, and it won the Parents’ Choice Award and the Sydney Taylor Book Award.
