Ransom Riggs is an author of young adult fiction whose work combines prose with photography. He was born on a farm in Maryland and grew up in southern Florida. He studied literature at Kenyon College and film at the University of Southern California.
Riggs wrote the Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children novels. The series began with Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, in which sixteen-year-old Jacob Portman travels from Florida to a remote island off the coast of Wales and discovers the ruins of Miss Peregrine’s orphanage. The series uses dozens of vintage found photographs alongside the story.
The Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children sequence includes Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, Hollow City, Library of Souls, A Map of Days, The Conference of the Birds and The Desolations of Devil’s Acre. Riggs also wrote Tales of the Peculiar, a story collection connected to the same fictional world, and Miss Peregrine’s Museum of Wonders, a companion guide to the peculiar world.
Library of Souls was published in hardback by Quirk Books on 22 September 2015 and continued the story of Jacob, Emma and Addison in Devil’s Acre. Miss Peregrine’s Journal for Peculiar Children was published on 30 August 2016 as a 192-page journal connected to the first three Peculiar Children novels.
Riggs began a new fantasy series with Sunderworld, Vol. I: The Extraordinary Disappointments of Leopold Berry. The hardback and ebook editions were published by Dutton Books for Young Readers on 27 August 2024, and the paperback edition was published on 29 July 2025.
