Recommended reading books for elementary, middle & high school students
Nic Stone is an American writer of young adult, middle-grade and adult fiction. She graduated from Spelman College, worked in teen mentoring, lived in Israel for several years, and then returned to the United States to write full-time. Her young adult novels include Dear Martin, Dear Justyce, Odd One Out, Jackpot and Chaos Theory.
Dear Martin began a three-book sequence about Justyce McAllister, Quan Banks and Jared Peter Christensen. Dear Justyce continued the sequence in 2020, and Dear Manny was published by Crown Books for Young Readers on 4 March 2025 for readers aged 14 and up.
Stone also writes for middle-grade readers. Clean Getaway and Fast Pitch are middle-grade novels, and Shuri: A Black Panther Novel is an original upper-middle-grade adventure about Shuri, T’Challa’s younger sister, travelling beyond Wakanda to investigate what is killing the Heart-Shaped Herb.
Stone has also written collaborative and non-fiction projects for young readers. She co-authored How to Be a (Young) Antiracist and The (Young) Antiracist’s Workbook with Ibram X. Kendi, and she contributed to Blackout and Whiteout with Dhonielle Clayton, Tiffany D. Jackson, Angie Thomas, Ashley Woodfolk and Nicola Yoon. Boom Town is her first adult novel, with publication by Simon & Schuster scheduled for 13 October 2026.
