Natasha Bowen, a distinguished writer and teacher of Nigerian-Welsh descent, has emerged as a notable figure in the realm of fantasy literature for young adults. Born in Cambridge, England, to a Nigerian Yoruba father and a Welsh mother, her upbringing in Cambridge provided little exposure to her Nigerian heritage. However, later in life, Natasha reconnected with her roots, a connection that significantly influenced her writing, particularly in the creation of her acclaimed novel, “Skin of the Sea.”
Educated at Bath Spa University, Natasha studied Creative Writing, laying the foundation for her literary endeavors. Following graduation, she transitioned to East London, where she embarked on a career as a full-time teacher while pursuing her passion for storytelling.
Natasha Bowen’s debut novel, “Skin of the Sea,” marks the inception of the “Of Mermaid and Orisa” series, drawing inspiration from her Nigerian heritage, African folklore, Yoruba culture, and a profound fascination with mermaids. Published by Random House on November 2, 2021, the novel follows the journey of Simi, a Mami Wata, as she traverses sea and land in search of the Supreme Creator. The narrative, enriched by elements of Black mermaids and Yoruba culture, resonated with readers and earned a coveted spot on the New York Times and Indie bestseller lists.
The success of “Skin of the Sea” prompted positive reviews, with critics applauding its parallels with “The Little Mermaid” and its poignant exploration of the Transatlantic Slave Trade. Natasha Bowen’s ability to weave a captivating narrative while infusing cultural richness has garnered widespread acclaim.
Natasha is not only a talented writer but also a devoted mother of three. Residing in the UK with her family, she continues to enrich the literary landscape. Anticipated with excitement, a sequel titled “Soul of the Deep” is scheduled for release on September 27, 2022.
