Recommended reading books for elementary, middle & high school students
Mike Deas is a Canadian author-illustrator of children’s graphic novels and picture books. He worked in the video game industry as a concept artist, texture artist and art lead in England and California before returning to Canada. Capilano College’s Commercial Animation Program helped him develop his drawing skills and imagination.
His graphic-novel work includes Dalen and Gole and the Graphic Guide Adventures series. Dalen and Gole: Scandal in Port Angus is a 128-page graphic novel for readers aged 9 to 12, published by Orca Book Publishers on 19 April 2018 in the ebook edition.
Mike Deas and Nancy Deas created Shadow Island, the first Sueño Bay Adventures graphic novel. The book follows Ollie and three classmates in a supernatural mystery on Sueño Bay, and the paperback edition is 192 pages and was published on 1 October 2019.
As an illustrator, his picture-book work includes The Buddy Bench, Gloria’s Big Problem and Calvin Gets the Last Word. Gloria’s Big Problem, written by Sarah Stiles Bright and illustrated by Mike Deas, was published by Tilbury House Publishers on 7 January 2020 for readers aged 7 to 10.
He illustrated Two Tales of Twenty-Six by Stephanie Simpson McLellan, a 64-page book built as two connected stories that readers turn upside down and back-to-front to read. Two Tales of Twenty-Six was published by Fitzhenry & Whiteside on 1 December 2024 for readers aged 6 to 8.
