Michaela Goade biography

Michaela Goade is an illustrator, artist and author of children’s picture books. She is a member of the Tlingit Nation and grew up in her ancestral homelands along the southeast coast of Alaska. Her picture-book work includes illustration for We Are Water Protectors by Carole Lindstrom and I Sang You Down from the Stars by Tasha Spillett-Sumner.

In 2021, Goade won the Randolph Caldecott Medal for her illustrations in We Are Water Protectors, written by Carole Lindstrom and published by Roaring Brook. The book is a children’s picture book about protecting water and responding to threats to the natural world.

Berry Song was Goade’s first book as both author and illustrator. The book later received a 2023 Caldecott Honor, with Goade named for both the writing and the illustrations.

Goade illustrated Remember, a picture-book adaptation of Joy Harjo’s poem, published by Random House Studio on 21 March 2023. Her illustrations for the book draw from her Tlingit culture, and the book received a 2024 American Indian Youth Literature Award Honor and a 2023 Boston Globe-Horn Book Honor.

Goade illustrated Being Home by Traci Sorell, published by Kokila on 7 May 2024. The 32-page picture book follows a young Cherokee girl and her family as they move back to their ancestral land.
