Melanie Gillman biography

Melanie Gillman is a cartoonist and illustrator who specialises in LGBTQ books for children and teenagers. They created the graphic novel As the Crow Flies and the graphic novel Stage Dreams, and they also teach in the comics MFA programme at California College of the Arts.

As the Crow Flies is a 272-page graphic novel about Charlie, a Black queer teenager at a Christian sleepaway camp for girls. The book was reviewed on 4 December 2017, and its details give Iron Circus as the publisher and November as the publication month.

Stage Dreams is a 104-page graphic historical fiction title by Melanie Gillman, illustrated by Melanie Gillman, and published by Graphic Universe. It follows Grace and Flor in the New Mexico Territory as they plan to steal Confederate war plans; its release date was 3 September 2019.

Gillman’s other books include Who Circled the Globe in Seventy-Two Days? Nellie Bly, Other Ever Afters and Who Was a Daring Pioneer of the Skies?: Amelia Earhart. As the Crow Flies won a Stonewall Honor Award.
