Matteo L. Cerilli is a Canadian author and activist known for his work in speculative fiction for young readers. His debut novel, Lockjaw, was published by Tundra Books in 2024. The book has been named to BookPage’s Best Young Adult Books of 2024, was selected as a CCBC Best Book for Kids and Teens, and chosen as an Ontario Library Association Best Bet. Lockjaw was also nominated for the 2025 White Pine Award and longlisted for The Pedro and Daniel Intersectionality Book Award.
Cerilli has co-founded Students for Queer Liberation and organized with the No Pride in Policing Coalition. While at York University, he was involved in establishing gender care services for trans students. Cerilli is represented by a literary agent at 5 Otter Literary and signed a two-book deal with Penguin Random House Canada, with a second novel forthcoming.
In addition to Lockjaw, Cerilli’s work includes the short story “Worth the Dying Shame” in the anthology Bury Your Gays: An Anthology of Tragic Queer Horror and poetry published in Augur magazine. His writing addresses themes such as queer justice, neurodivergent liberation, youth equity, and community care.
