Margret Rey was a children’s author born in Germany. She worked with H. A. Rey on picture books and is best known for the Curious George stories. Their books also include Pretzel, Spotty and Find the Constellations.
Curious George began as a character in Cecily G. and the Nine Monkeys before becoming the central figure in the Curious George books. Margret Rey and H. A. Rey went on to create more stories about Curious George, including Curious George Takes a Job, Curious George Rides a Bike and Curious George Gets a Medal.
In 1940, Margret Rey and H. A. Rey left Paris as the German army advanced, travelling by bicycle to southern France with children’s book manuscripts among their possessions. Their wartime escape is the subject of The Journey That Saved Curious George: The True Wartime Escape of Margret and H.A. Rey, a children’s biography by Louise Borden illustrated by Allan Drummond, published by HarperCollins on 16 August 2010.
