Lisa Fipps biography

Lisa Fipps is an author of middle-grade books, a graduate of Ball State University, an award-winning former journalist and a former director of marketing for a public library. In that library marketing role, she won the Sara Laughlin marketing award.

Her debut novel, Starfish, is a middle-grade novel in verse about Ellie, an 11-year-old girl who is bullied about her weight and learns to stand up for herself. The hardback edition was published by Nancy Paulsen Books on 9 March 2021, and the paperback edition was published on 2 May 2023.

Starfish is 256 pages in its Nancy Paulsen Books edition and is aimed at readers aged 10 and up. The book uses verse to tell Ellie’s story of self-acceptance and self-advocacy, with support from friends, her father and a therapist.

On 24 January 2022, Starfish was named a Michael L. Printz Honor winner. Fipps followed Starfish with And Then, Boom!, another children’s book reviewed as a work in verse and published on 7 May 2024.
