Lincoln Peirce (pronounced “purse”) is an American cartoonist and author best known for creating the comic strip Big Nate. The strip debuted in 1991 and has been syndicated in over 400 newspapers worldwide. Peirce has also written a series of Big Nate novels for young readers, beginning with Big Nate: In a Class by Himself in 2010. These novels have appeared on the New York Times bestseller list and have been translated into multiple languages.
Born on October 23, 1963, in Ames, Iowa, Peirce grew up in Durham, New Hampshire. He developed an interest in comic strips at a young age, drawing inspiration from Charles Schulz’s Peanuts. Peirce studied art and art history at Colby College in Maine, where he created a weekly comic strip called Third Floor. He later earned an MFA in studio art from Brooklyn College and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. After completing his education, Peirce taught art and coached baseball at Xavier High School in New York City for three years.
In addition to his work on Big Nate, Peirce created the Max & the Midknights trilogy, a comedic adventure series set in the Middle Ages. The first book was published in 2019 and spent multiple weeks on the New York Times bestseller list, peaking at number two. The series has been adapted into an animated television show, which premiered on Nickelodeon in January 2024.
