Kate Leiper is a Scottish fine artist and illustrator whose children’s book work includes illustrated retellings of Scottish folklore, myth and legend. She illustrated Theresa Breslin’s An Illustrated Treasury of Scottish Folk and Fairy Tales, a collection of tales from across Scotland featuring creatures such as stoorworms, brownies, kelpies and selkies.
Her collaboration with Theresa Breslin continued with An Illustrated Treasury of Scottish Mythical Creatures and An Illustrated Treasury of Scottish Castle Legends. The castle legends volume brings together stories connected with Scottish castles including Edinburgh Castle, Glamis, Dunvegan, Stirling Castle and Eilean Donan.
Leiper also illustrated The Book of the Howlat, a picture-book retelling by James Robertson of Richard Holland’s fifteenth-century Scots poem The Buke of the Howlat. An Illustrated Treasury of Scottish Folk and Fairy Tales was longlisted for the Kate Greenaway Medal 2013.
