Recommended reading books for elementary, middle & high school students
Judd Winick grew up on Long Island and spent time drawing, reading X-Men comics and the newspaper strip Bloom County, and watching Looney Tunes. He is a screenwriter and cartoonist, and he has written for comic series including Batman, Green Lantern, Green Arrow, Justice League and Star Wars.
Winick appeared as a cast member of MTV’s The Real World: San Francisco. His graphic memoir Pedro and Me: Friendship, Loss, and What I Learned is about Pedro Zamora, an AIDS activist and his roommate from The Real World: San Francisco.
For DC Comics, Winick has had runs on Green Lantern, Green Arrow, The Outsiders and Justice League: Generation Lost. He wrote the animated feature Batman: Under the Hood, based on his Batman work, and Batman: Under the Red Hood: DC Compact Comics Edition collects the original Red Hood saga from Batman #635–641, #645–650 and Batman Annual #25.
Winick is the creator of the Hilo graphic novel series for children. Hilo Book 1: The Boy Who Crashed to Earth was published by Random House Graphic, and the series is aimed at readers aged 8–12 and school grades 3–7. Hilo: The Epic Boxed Set (Books 1-10) was published on 7 October 2025 by Random House Graphic.
Hilo Presents: The Mighty expanded Winick’s work for young readers with a new story world connected to Hilo readers. It was published by Random House Graphic on 3 February 2026, with 240 pages, an age range of 8–12 years, and grades 3–7.
