Jeff VanderMeer biography

Jeff VanderMeer writes fiction, science fiction and fantasy. His novels include the Southern Reach trilogy: Annihilation, Authority and Acceptance. Annihilation won the Nebula Award and the Shirley Jackson Award, and it was adapted as a film directed by Alex Garland.

VanderMeer’s work engages with ecological issues, and Borne was added to the National Endowment for the Arts Big Read programme. He has also written nonfiction for major newspapers and magazines, including the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, the Atlantic, Slate, Salon and the Washington Post.

VanderMeer has worked as an editor as well as a novelist. With Ann VanderMeer, he edited The Big Book of Modern Fantasy, a World Fantasy Award-winning anthology published in paperback on 21 July 2020.

His other books include Wonderbook, an illustrated creative writing guide. VanderMeer served as the 2016–2017 Trias Writer in Residence at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, and his public speaking has included appearances at the Guggenheim, the Library of Congress and the Arthur C. Clarke Center for the Human Imagination.

Dead Astronauts was a finalist for the 2020 Locus Award in the fantasy novel category.
