Recommended reading books for elementary, middle & high school students
Gideon Sterer writes children’s picture books. He grew up in upstate New York, and his childhood included time around a small zoo owned by his parents. His books include The Christmas Owl, I Will Read to You, From Ed’s to Ned’s, Not Your Nest!, The Night Knights and The Midnight Fair.
From Ed’s to Ned’s was published by Knopf Books for Young Readers on 2 June 2020, with illustrations by Lucy Ruth Cummins. The picture book is for readers aged 4 to 7 and follows children travelling from one friend’s home to another by rhyming, inventive routes.
It Began with Lemonade was published by Dial Books on 25 May 2021, with illustrations by Lian Cho. The book is a 40-page picture book for children aged 4 to 8, about a girl who starts a lemonade stand and finds unexpected customers beyond her street.
The Midnight Fair is a wordless picture book written by Sterer and illustrated by Mariachiara Di Giorgio. The story follows wild animals entering an empty fairground at night, and it won the Kate Greenaway Medal Shadowers’ Choice Award and was shortlisted for the Kate Greenaway Medal.
The Dream was published by HarperCollins on 17 February 2026, with illustrations by Nik Henderson. The 88-page hardcover is a wordless fantasy picture book for children aged 4 to 8, about a girl, a wolf and animals working together to protect the natural world.
