David Bowles biography

David Bowles is a Mexican American author and translator from South Texas. He works as an associate professor at the University of Texas Río Grande Valley and serves as vice president of the Texas Institute of Letters.

His books include They Call Me Güero / Me dicen Güero, My Two Border Towns / Mis dos pueblos fronterizos, Ancient Night / Noche antigua and The Prince & the Coyote / El príncipe y la coyote. He has also written The Smoking Mirror, the 13th Street series and Feathered Serpent, Dark Heart of Sky: Myths of Mexico.

My Two Border Towns, illustrated by Erika Meza, was published by Kokila on 14 September 2021. The picture book follows a boy and his father on a weekend trip across the U.S.–Mexico border and is available in English and Spanish.

My Two Border Towns won the 2022 Américas Award, the 2022 Tomás Rivera Book Award and the 2022 Premio, Mejor Libro Infantil/Best Spanish Language Picture Book Award Gold Medal. It was also chosen as an ALSC 2022 Notable Children’s Book and for the 2022 NCSS-CBC Notable Social Studies Trade Books list.

In 2020, Bowles co-founded #DignidadLiteraria, a grassroots activist hashtag and movement focused on equity for Latinx people in publishing. His contribution to All the Love Under the Vast Sky was published by Nancy Paulsen Books on 14 January 2025.
