Recommended reading books for elementary, middle & high school students
Danica McKellar is an author of mathematics books for children and teenagers, a mathematician and an advocate for maths education. She graduated summa cum laude from UCLA with a degree in Mathematics and co-authored the Chayes-McKellar-Winn theorem. In 2000, she was invited to speak before Congress about the importance of women in maths and science.
Her McKellar Math books are written for readers from ages 0 to 16. Math Doesn’t Suck: How to Survive Middle School Math Without Losing Your Mind or Breaking a Nail is part of the McKellar Math series and was published by Plume on 1 July 2008. The book is a 336-page middle-school maths workbook for girls, parents and educators, covering topics including fractions, percentages and pre-algebra.
Kiss My Math: Showing Pre-Algebra Who’s Boss teaches pre-algebra for seventh- to ninth-grade girls and includes work on negative numbers, variables, absolute values and exponents. The paperback edition was published by Penguin Publishing Group on 30 June 2009, has 352 pages and is in the McKellar Math series.
McKellar also writes picture books that introduce early maths concepts. Her titles include Goodnight, Numbers, Ten Magic Butterflies and I Love You 100: A Counting Book Full of Love. I Love You 100: A Counting Book Full of Love, illustrated by Josée Masse, was published by Random House Children’s Books on 4 November 2025 for ages 4 to 8.
