Colleen.AF Venable biography

Colleen AF Venable is an author, designer and maker. Her work for young readers includes the YA graphic novel Kiss Number 8, illustrated by Ellen T. Crenshaw, and the counting board book One More Wheel!, illustrated by Blythe Russo. She also wrote Guinea Pig, Pet Shop Private Eye, a graphic novel series illustrated by Stephanie Yue.

Kiss Number 8 was longlisted for the 2019 National Book Award for Young People’s Literature. The book was also an Eisner Award nominee and a Publishers Weekly Best Books of the Year selection.

Her practical non-fiction comics include Maker Comics: Build a Robot!, illustrated by Kathryn Hudson, a 128-page children’s book in First Second’s Maker Comics series with instructions for constructing six different robots.

Venable’s books for primary-age readers include Katie the Catsitter, Katie the Catsitter 2: Best Friends for Never and Katie the Catsitter 3: Secrets and Sidekicks, all illustrated by Stephanie Yue. She has also adapted Junie B. Jones stories into graphic novels, including Junie B. Jones and the Stupid Smelly Bus: The Graphic Novel, illustrated by Honie Beam.

Other children’s books by Venable include The Oboe Goes Boom Boom Boom, illustrated by Lian Cho and released on 22 September 2020, and Kitten Ninja, co-written with Marcie Colleen, illustrated by Ellen Stubbings and released on 27 February 2024.
