Bruce Handy biography

Bruce Handy is a journalist, critic, humorist and children’s author. He began his career as a writer and editor at Spy magazine and spent the 1992–1993 season writing for Saturday Night Live. His work has appeared in The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, The New York Times and The Atlantic. His book Wild Things: The Joys of Reading Children’s Literature as an Adult was published in 2017.

Handy has written five picture books. The Happiness of a Dog with a Ball in Its Mouth, illustrated by Hyewon Yum, was published in March 2021. The Book from Far Away, illustrated by Julie Benbassat, followed in August 2023. What If One Day…, illustrated by Ashleigh Corrin, was published in September 2023, and There Was a Shadow, illustrated by Lisk Feng, was published in 2024. What If One Day… and The Happiness of a Dog with a Ball in Its Mouth were named New York Times Best Children’s Books. In 2026, he published Hollywood High: A Totally Epic, Way Opinionated History of Teen Movies.
