Avi, whose full name is Edward Irving Wortis, was born on December 23, 1937, in New York City. He grew up in Brooklyn, where he developed a passion for reading and writing from a young age. Avi’s love for literature was nurtured by his parents, who were both avid readers.
Avi attended Stuyvesant High School in New York City, where he excelled academically. After high school, he went on to study at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1959. Following his undergraduate studies, Avi pursued a Master’s degree in Library Science from Columbia University.
Avi’s career in writing began in the early 1970s when he published his first book, “Things That Sometimes Happen.” Since then, he has written over 70 books for children and young adults, covering a wide range of genres including historical fiction, adventure, mystery, and fantasy. Avi’s works have received numerous awards and accolades, including the Newbery Medal for his novel “Crispin: The Cross of Lead” in 2003.
