Recommended reading books for elementary, middle & high school students
Adam Jay Epstein is a children’s author and screenwriter whose children’s book debut was The Familiars, written with Andrew Jacobson and illustrated by Bobby Chiu. The Familiars was published by Harper in September 2010 and is a fantasy adventure for ages 8–12 about Aldwyn, a street cat who becomes involved with young wizards and other animal familiars.
Epstein has written with Andrew Jacobson on more than one middle-grade series. The Familiars series continued with Secrets of the Crown, published by Harper/HarperCollins on 6 September 2011, and Palace of Dreams, published on 23 December 2013.
Epstein and Jacobson also created the Starbounders series. Starbounders was published by Harper/HarperCollins on 4 June 2013, with illustrations by David McClellan, and follows Zachary Night as he trains at Indigo 8, a secret centre for future defenders of the galaxy. The sequel Rebellion was published on 13 May 2014.
Epstein grew up in Great Neck, New York, and developed an early interest in fantasy and science fiction. He has described a seventh-grade writing assignment, a sequel to The Good Earth, as the point when he became committed to writing stories.
