Recommended reading books for elementary, middle & high school students
Aaron Reynolds writes books for children, including picture books, chapter books, graphic novels and fantasy. After graduating with a degree in theater from Illinois Wesleyan University, he worked as an actor, businessman, waiter, dancer, carpenter and chef before becoming a writer. He also visits elementary schools to give presentations about books and reading.
His best-known books include Creepy Carrots!, Creepy Pair of Underwear! and Creepy Crayon!, all illustrated by Peter Brown. Creepy Carrots! is a Caldecott Honor-winning picture book. Creepy Pair of Underwear! was published on August 15, 2017, and Creepy Crayon! was published on August 23, 2022. Reynolds is also the author of The Incredibly Dead Pets of Rex Dexter and the Fart Quest fantasy series.
More recently, he has continued the Jasper Rabbit world in chapter books for younger middle-grade readers. Troubling Tonsils! is part of Jasper Rabbit’s Creepy Tales!, and Unsettling Salad! was published on February 3, 2026.
