Yuyi Morales biography

Yuyi Morales is a Mexican-born author and illustrator known for her contributions to children’s literature. She began her career in the United States after moving from Mexico in 1994. Morales has written and illustrated numerous picture books, often drawing on her cultural heritage and personal experiences to inform her work. Her books frequently explore themes of family, migration, and identity.

Morales has received recognition for both her writing and illustration. She is the creator of Just a Minute: A Trickster Tale and Counting Book, which was published by Chronicle Books in 2003. This book received the Pura Belpré Illustrator Award in 2004. Morales has also illustrated books for other authors, including Harvesting Hope: The Story of Cesar Chavez by Kathleen Krull.

In 2018, Morales published Dreamers with Neal Porter Books. This picture book, which tells the story of an immigrant mother and child, received the 2019 Pura Belpré Illustrator Award. Morales’s work has been recognized for its vibrant artwork and its celebration of Latinx culture.

Her book Dreamers was named a 2018 New York Times/New York Public Library Best Illustrated Children’s Book.
