Youshan Tang biography

Youshan Tang is an artist and illustrator known for picture books that introduce young readers to world folklore and Chinese cultural heritage. He grew up in Shanghai and studied Chinese art and literature at the Central Academy of Fine Arts and Peking University.

Tang’s work in children’s publishing includes collaborations with writers and storytellers on retellings and cultural narratives. He illustrated Abadeha: The Philippine Cinderella by Myrna J. de la Paz and Anklet for a Princess: A Cinderella Story from India by Lila Mehta and Meredith Brucker, both issued by Lee & Low Books/Shen’s Books as part of multicultural folktale lists. He also illustrated Ji-li Jiang’s The Magical Monkey King: Mischief in Heaven, a collection adapted from classic Chinese tales.

Across these projects, Tang pairs clear, narrative imagery with research-based detail suited to classroom read-alouds and independent reading. His illustration credits reflect partnerships with authors who present folklore and cultural history for elementary and middle-grade audiences.
