William Grill biography

William Grill is a British author and illustrator known for his work in children’s literature. He studied Illustration at University College Falmouth. Grill’s debut book, Shackleton’s Journey, was published by Flying Eye Books in 2014. The book recounts Ernest Shackleton’s 1914–1917 Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition and is noted for its detailed colored pencil illustrations and accessible storytelling.

Shackleton’s Journey received the 2015 Kate Greenaway Medal, an award recognizing distinguished illustration in a book for children. Grill’s second book, The Wolves of Currumpaw, was published in 2016 by Flying Eye Books. This work is inspired by the true story of a wolf hunt in New Mexico and is based on Ernest Thompson Seton’s 1898 story “Lobo, the King of Currumpaw.”

Grill’s illustrations have appeared in various publications, and he has contributed to projects beyond his own books, including educational and environmental initiatives. His work is characterized by a focus on historical and natural subjects, often rendered in colored pencil.

In 2018, William Grill’s Shackleton’s Journey was selected as a New York Times Best Illustrated Children’s Book.
