Vera Brosgol was born on August 28, 1984, in Moscow, Russia. At the age of five, she immigrated to the United States with her family and settled in the suburbs of Los Angeles, California. Growing up, Brosgol developed a passion for drawing and storytelling, which eventually led her to pursue a career in animation and illustration.
After completing her studies at Sheridan College in Ontario, Canada, Brosgol began working as a storyboard artist at Laika Entertainment, an animation studio based in Oregon. During her time at Laika, she contributed to the production of several acclaimed films, including “Coraline” (2009) and “ParaNorman” (2012).
In addition to her work in animation, Brosgol has also made a significant impact in the world of graphic novels and children’s literature. Her debut graphic novel, “Anya’s Ghost” (2011), received widespread critical acclaim and won numerous awards, including the Eisner Award for Best Publication for Young Adults.
Brosgol’s second graphic novel, “Be Prepared” (2018), draws inspiration from her own experiences attending Russian summer camp as a child. The book explores themes of identity, friendship, and the challenges of fitting in. “Be Prepared” was well-received by readers and critics alike, earning Brosgol a nomination for the Harvey Award for Best Children or Young Adult Book.
Brosgol’s illustrations are characterized by their expressive and emotive qualities. She often employs a muted color palette and uses subtle details to convey the emotions and experiences of her characters. Her storytelling style combines humor, vulnerability, and relatability, making her work accessible to readers of all ages.
Brosgol has cited a variety of influences on her work, including the works of Hayao Miyazaki, the renowned Japanese animator and filmmaker. She also draws inspiration from her own multicultural background, incorporating elements of Russian folklore and traditions into her storytelling.
Vera Brosgol’s contributions to the fields of animation and graphic novels have garnered her widespread recognition and acclaim. Her work has been celebrated for its ability to resonate with readers of all ages, tackling complex themes with sensitivity and authenticity.
