Vashti Harrison is an American author, illustrator, and filmmaker known for her work in children’s literature. Born on August 14, 1988, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, Harrison has made significant contributions to the field of children’s literature through her captivating illustrations and empowering storytelling.
Harrison grew up in a creative household, with her mother being an artist and her father a filmmaker. This artistic environment greatly influenced her passion for storytelling and visual arts. She attended the University of Virginia, where she studied media studies and studio art. During her time in college, Harrison developed her skills in animation and filmmaking, which later became integral to her career.
After completing her studies, Harrison worked as a freelance filmmaker and illustrator. In 2015, she began sharing her illustrations on social media platforms, gaining recognition for her unique style and representation of diverse characters. Her illustrations often featured strong and inspiring women, celebrating their achievements and contributions to society.
In 2017, Harrison published her first book, Little Leaders: Bold Women in Black History. This critically acclaimed work showcases the stories of 40 influential African American women who have made significant contributions to various fields, including politics, science, arts, and sports. Through her captivating illustrations and concise biographies, Harrison introduces young readers to these remarkable women, inspiring them to dream big and pursue their passions.
In 2018, Harrison released her second book, Dream Big, Little One. This beautifully illustrated picture book celebrates the achievements of black women throughout history, encouraging young readers to believe in themselves and their abilities. Harrison’s vibrant illustrations and empowering messages make this book a favorite among children and parents alike.
Since the success of her first two books, Harrison has continued to create inspiring and inclusive children’s literature. She has collaborated with numerous authors and illustrators, contributing her unique artistic style to various projects. Her works have received several accolades, including the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work for Children.
