Taro Gomi biography

Taro Gomi is a Japanese author and illustrator known for his extensive contributions to children’s literature. Born on August 20, 1945, in Tokyo, Japan, he graduated from the Kuwazawa Design Institute. Gomi’s first children’s picture book was published in 1973, marking the beginning of a prolific career in publishing.

Over the decades, Gomi has created more than 400 books, encompassing picture books, activity books, and educational titles. His works have been translated into over 15 languages, reaching a global audience. Notable English-language titles include Everyone Poops (1993), My Friends, Spring Is Here, Bus Stops, and Over the Ocean. Everyone Poops, originally published in Japan in 1977 as Minna Unchi, has become a widely recognized book addressing bodily functions in a straightforward manner.

In addition to his books, Gomi has contributed to various creative fields, including stationery and clothing design, as well as producing animated videos. His book Over the Ocean received the Mildred L. Batchelder Award in 2017, recognizing its excellence in translation and contribution to children’s literature in the United States.
