Tamora Pierce is an American author known for her fantasy novels for children and young adults. She began writing stories as a teenager and later studied at the University of Pennsylvania. Pierce is recognized for creating strong female protagonists and detailed fantasy worlds, often inspired by historical settings and mythologies.
Pierce’s first published book, Alanna: The First Adventure, was released in 1983 by Atheneum Books. This novel is the first in the Song of the Lioness quartet, which follows the journey of Alanna of Trebond as she disguises herself as a boy to train as a knight. The series established Pierce’s reputation for writing about young women who challenge traditional gender roles.
Following the Song of the Lioness series, Pierce wrote several other interconnected series set in the Tortall universe, including the Immortals quartet, the Protector of the Small quartet, and the Trickster duology. She has also written the Circle of Magic series, set in a different world, which began with Sandry’s Book in 1997.
Pierce’s works have been published by various imprints, including Atheneum, Scholastic, and Random House Books for Young Readers. Her books have received recognition from organizations such as the American Library Association, and she has been a guest at numerous literary conventions and events.
In 2018, Tamora Pierce published Tempests and Slaughter, the first book in the Numair Chronicles, with Random House Books for Young Readers.
