Tamara Pizzoli biography

Dr. Tamara Pizzoli is an author, publisher, and producer who writes for children and young readers. A former kindergarten teacher, she holds both a master’s and a doctorate in education. In 2014 she founded The English Schoolhouse Publishing, where she serves as editor and publisher in addition to curating artists and producing audiobooks.

Pizzoli’s picture books and nonfiction for young readers include Tallulah the Tooth Fairy CEO (Farrar, Straus and Giroux Books for Young Readers, July 30, 2019), illustrated by Federico Fabiani; Z Is for Zora: An Alphabet Book of Notable Writers from Around the World (English SchoolHouse, June 4, 2018), illustrated by Howell Edwards; and When the Schools Shut Down: A Young Girl’s Story of Virginia’s “Lost Generation” and the Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka Decision (HarperCollins, January 11, 2022), co-written with Yolanda Gladden and illustrated by Keisha Morris. She is also the author of Bold Words from Black Women: Inspiration and Truths from 50 Extraordinary Leaders Who Helped Shape Our World (Denene Millner Books/Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, January 18, 2022), with artwork by Monica Ahanonu, and Bold Words from Black Men: Insights and Reflections from 50 Notable Trailblazers Who Influenced the World (Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, April 8, 2025).

Pizzoli established The English Schoolhouse Publishing in 2014 to pair original texts with fine-art illustration and classroom-ready resources. A recent milestone: When the Schools Shut Down was named a 2023 Jane Addams Children’s Book Award finalist.
