Steven Scott is a comics writer whose work for young readers includes the award-winning graphic memoir They Called Us Enemy (Top Shelf Productions/IDW Publishing, 2019), co-written with George Takei and Justin Eisinger and illustrated by Harmony Becker. The book became a New York Times bestseller and received major recognition in 2020, including the Will Eisner Award for Best Reality-Based Work, the American Book Award, and the Asian/Pacific American Award for Young Adult Literature.
Publisher materials note that Scott has worked regularly in comics since 2010, with additional writing appearing for Archie Comics, Arcana Studios, and Heavy Metal. An expanded edition of They Called Us Enemy and a Spanish-language edition were issued in 2020, extending the book’s classroom and library reach for secondary students.
Scott’s middle-grade series Sixth-Grade Shape-Shifter launched with Capstone’s Stone Arch Books in August 2025. Illustrated by Lavinia Brandizi, the early titles—Ruff Day, Gadget Bandit, Game Changer, and Double Feature—follow twelve-year-old Sawyer Stone, a shape-shifter whose abilities complicate school, friendships, and everyday problem-solving. The series is positioned for independent readers in grades 4–7.
Across these projects, Scott’s bibliography centers on accessible storytelling for middle-grade and teen audiences, combining historical nonfiction in graphic form with fast-paced, character-driven adventure for younger readers.
