Shannon Hale is an American author known for her work in children’s and young adult literature, including novels, graphic novels, and series fiction. She studied English and theater at the University of Utah and earned a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from the University of Montana.
Hale’s first novel, The Goose Girl, was published in 2003 and began the Books of Bayern series. She received broader recognition with Princess Academy, which earned a Newbery Honor in 2006. This book led to sequels Palace of Stone and The Forgotten Sisters.
She is the author of the Ever After High series and co-author of the Princess in Black chapter book series with Dean Hale, illustrated by LeUyen Pham. The Princess in Black books are widely used with early readers in classrooms and libraries.
Hale’s collaborations with LeUyen Pham also include the graphic novels Real Friends, Best Friends, and Friends Forever, which are based on her childhood experiences and focus on friendship and growing up. These titles have appeared on several bestseller lists and have been recognized for their impact on young readers.
In addition to children’s books, Hale has written young adult and adult novels, including Dangerous, a science fiction title, and Austenland, which was adapted into a feature film. Her books have received awards from organizations such as the American Library Association and the Children’s Book Council and have been translated into multiple languages.
Hale is also active as a public speaker, presenting at schools, libraries, and conferences.
