Scott O’Dell (1898–1989) was an American author renowned for his contributions to children’s historical fiction. Born O’Dell Gabriel Scott in Los Angeles, California, he later adopted the name Scott O’Dell after a typographical error in a publication led to the misprint. Embracing the new moniker, he legally changed his name in the 1920s. O’Dell attended several institutions, including Occidental College, the University of Wisconsin, Stanford University, and the University of Rome, though he did not complete a degree at any of them.
During World War I, O’Dell served in the U.S. Army, and in World War II, he enlisted in the Army Air Forces. His early career included work as a cameraman and technical director in the film industry, as well as roles as a book columnist and editor for Los Angeles newspapers.
O’Dell’s literary career began with adult novels, but he gained prominence with his first children’s book, Island of the Blue Dolphins (1960). This novel, inspired by the true story of a Native American girl stranded alone on an island, earned the 1961 Newbery Medal and was later adapted into a film. He continued to write historical novels for young readers, including The King’s Fifth (1966), The Black Pearl (1967), and Sing Down the Moon (1970), all of which received Newbery Honor distinctions.
Throughout his career, O’Dell authored 26 novels for young people, three adult novels, and four nonfiction books. His works often explored themes related to historical events and cultures, particularly those of California and Mexico. In recognition of his contributions to children’s literature, he received the Hans Christian Andersen Award in 1972, the University of Southern Mississippi Medallion in 1976, and the Regina Medal from the Catholic Library Association in 1978.
In 1982, O’Dell established the Scott O’Dell Award for Historical Fiction, aiming to encourage authors to write engaging historical novels for children and young adults. The award continues to honor outstanding works in the genre.
Scott O’Dell passed away in 1989 at the age of 91.
