Richard Van Camp biography
Richard Van Camp is a Canadian author of children’s and young adult literature, as well as a storyteller and educator. He is a member of the Tłı̨chǫ Dene Nation from Fort Smith, Northwest Territories. Van Camp’s work often draws on his Indigenous heritage and explores themes of community, identity, and tradition.
He has written picture books, graphic novels, short stories, and novels for young readers. His children’s books include Little You, illustrated by Julie Flett, and We Sang You Home, illustrated by Julie Flett. Van Camp’s young adult novel The Lesser Blessed was published in 1996 by Douglas & McIntyre. He has also authored graphic novels such as A Blanket of Butterflies and Three Feathers.
Van Camp’s writing has been recognized with several awards and honors. His picture book Little You was selected for the 2017 TD Grade One Book Giveaway. In 2021, his book On the Trapline, illustrated by Julie Flett, won the Governor General’s Literary Award for Young People’s Literature – Illustrated Books.
