Peggy Rathmann is an American author and illustrator celebrated for her contributions to children’s picture books. She received the 1996 Caldecott Medal for Officer Buckle and Gloria (1995), a story highlighting the importance of teamwork between a safety officer and his canine companion.
Born Margaret Crosby Rathmann on March 4, 1953, in St. Paul, Minnesota, she grew up in the suburbs with her siblings. Rathmann earned a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from the University of Minnesota. She furthered her education in the arts by studying commercial art at the American Academy in Chicago, fine art at the Atelier Lack in Minneapolis, and children’s book writing and illustration at the Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles.
Her debut book, Ruby the Copycat (1991), garnered the “Most Promising New Author” distinction in Publishers Weekly’s annual Cuffie Awards. She illustrated Bootsie Barker Bites (1992), written by her instructor Barbara Bottner. Rathmann’s subsequent works include Good Night, Gorilla (1994), noted for its minimal text and expressive illustrations; 10 Minutes till Bedtime (1998); and The Day the Babies Crawled Away (2003), recognized for its silhouette-style artwork.
