Pedro Martín is an American author and illustrator recognized for his contributions to children’s literature through graphic storytelling. He is the creator of Mexikid: A Graphic Memoir, a middle-grade graphic novel published by Dial Books in August 2023. The memoir draws from Martín’s experiences growing up as one of nine children in a Mexican American family and recounts a family road trip to bring his grandfather from Mexico to the United States.
Before his career in publishing, Martín worked at Hallmark Cards for 27 years, where he served as an artist and later as a Master Artist. During his tenure, he developed animated content, including the character Asteroid Andy, and contributed to projects for CBS and the Hallmark Channel. He was nominated twice for Annie Awards in production design.
Martín began sharing autobiographical comics online under the title Mexikid Stories, which gained a following on platforms like Instagram and GoComics. These vignettes laid the groundwork for his debut book, which has been honored with multiple awards, including a Newbery Honor, the Pura Belpré Author and Illustrator Awards, the Eisner Award for Best Publication for Kids, and the Tomás Rivera Children’s Book Award.
In addition to his work in graphic novels, Martín continues to engage with audiences through school visits and presentations, sharing insights into his creative process and cultural heritage.
