Paul Galdone biography

Paul Galdone was an illustrator and author known for his contributions to children’s literature. Born in Budapest, Hungary, he immigrated to the United States as a young man. Galdone studied at the Art Student’s League and the New York School for Industrial Design. He began his career as a commercial artist before moving into book illustration.

Galdone illustrated and retold many classic folk and fairy tales, often collaborating with author Eve Titus on the Basil of Baker Street series. He is particularly recognized for his retellings and illustrations of traditional stories such as The Three Bears, The Little Red Hen, The Gingerbread Boy, and The Three Little Pigs. His distinctive style is characterized by expressive line work and engaging, accessible imagery for young readers.

Throughout his career, Galdone illustrated more than 300 books. His work has been recognized by several awards, including two Caldecott Honor citations for Anatole (1957) and Anatole and the Cat (1958), both written by Eve Titus. Galdone’s retellings and illustrations continue to be widely used in classrooms and libraries.

Paul Galdone’s retelling and illustration of The Little Red Hen was published by Clarion Books in 1973.
