Omar Mohamed is a Somali author and humanitarian known for his work in advocating for refugees and sharing stories from his own experiences. Mohamed spent much of his childhood in the Dadaab refugee camp in Kenya after fleeing civil war in Somalia. He later resettled in the United States, where he has worked to support refugee communities.
Mohamed is the co-author, with Victoria Jamieson, of the graphic novel When Stars Are Scattered, published by Dial Books for Young Readers in 2020. The book is based on Mohamed’s life in Dadaab and his journey through the challenges of displacement, family separation, and hope for the future. When Stars Are Scattered has received recognition for its portrayal of refugee experiences and was named a National Book Award Finalist for Young People’s Literature in 2020.
