Recommended reading books for elementary, middle & high school students
Niamh Sharkey is an Irish author and illustrator known for her work in children’s picture books. She studied at the College of Marketing and Design in Dublin, where she earned a degree in Visual Communications. Sharkey’s distinctive illustration style often features bold colors and textured mixed media.
Her debut picture book, The Gigantic Turnip, was published in 1999 by Barefoot Books. She has also written and illustrated titles such as The Ravenous Beast and I’m a Happy Hugglewug. Sharkey’s books have been published by several major publishers, including Walker Books and Candlewick Press.
In addition to her work as an author and illustrator, Sharkey served as Laureate na nÓg, Ireland’s laureate for children’s literature, from 2012 to 2014. Her book I’m a Happy Hugglewug was adapted into the animated television series Henry Hugglemonster by Disney Junior.
In 2000, Niamh Sharkey received the Mother Goose Award for her illustration work in The Gigantic Turnip.
