Recommended reading books for elementary, middle & high school students
Muon Van is a Vietnamese American author of children’s books. She was born in Vietnam and immigrated to the United States as a child. Van writes picture books that often reflect her cultural heritage and family experiences. Her debut picture book, In a Village by the Sea, was illustrated by April Chu and published by Creston Books in 2015. The book explores the daily life of a Vietnamese fishing family and has been noted for its lyrical text and evocative illustrations.
Van has also written The Little Tree, illustrated by JoAnn Adinolfi and published by Kids Can Press in 2015, and Wishes, illustrated by Victo Ngai and published by Orchard Books in 2021. Wishes tells the story of a family’s journey from Vietnam and is inspired by Van’s own experiences. The book has received recognition for its portrayal of hope and resilience.
In 2022, Wishes was named a Charlotte Zolotow Award Honor Book.
