Melanie Gillman biography

Melanie Gillman is an American cartoonist, illustrator, and writer known for their work in graphic novels and webcomics. Gillman holds an MFA in Comics from the Center for Cartoon Studies. Their work often explores themes of identity, community, and LGBTQ+ experiences.

Gillman is the creator of the webcomic As the Crow Flies, which began in 2012. The story follows a queer Black teenager at an all-white Christian summer camp. The webcomic was later published as a graphic novel by Iron Circus Comics in 2017. As the Crow Flies was recognized as a Stonewall Honor Book by the American Library Association in 2018.

In addition to their webcomic, Gillman has written and illustrated for various anthologies and comic series. They authored the graphic novel Stage Dreams, published by Lerner Publishing Group in 2019, which tells the story of two queer women in the American West during the 1860s.

Gillman has also contributed to the Lumberjanes comic series, published by BOOM! Studios, and has taught comics courses at the California College of the Arts.

In 2018, As the Crow Flies was named a Stonewall Honor Book by the American Library Association.
