Mary-Joan Gerson is an author of children’s books known for her works that often explore cultural themes and folktales. Her writing includes picture books and stories that introduce young readers to traditions and narratives from around the world. Gerson’s books have been published by various publishers, including Little, Brown Books for Young Readers and Scholastic.
Among her notable works is Why the Sky is Far Away: A Nigerian Folktale, which retells a traditional story from Nigeria and was illustrated by Carla Golembe. Another of her books, The Secret Life of the Red Fox, illustrated by Daniel Miyares, presents information about the natural world through the perspective of a red fox. Gerson has also written People of Corn: A Mayan Story, illustrated by Carla Golembe, which introduces readers to a tale from Mayan mythology.
Her book Why the Sky is Far Away: A Nigerian Folktale was published by Little, Brown Books for Young Readers in 1992.
