Marion Dane Bauer biography

Marion Dane Bauer is an American author known for her contributions to children’s and young adult literature. She has written numerous novels, picture books, and nonfiction works for young readers. Bauer earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Missouri and began her career as a teacher before turning to writing.

Bauer’s first novel, Shelter from the Wind, was published in 1976. She is recognized for her ability to address complex themes such as family, loss, and identity in her writing. Her 1986 novel On My Honor received a Newbery Honor in 1987. Bauer has also written picture books, including If You Were Born a Kitten and My Mother Is Mine, as well as nonfiction titles such as What’s Your Story?: A Young Person’s Guide to Writing Fiction.

In addition to her writing, Bauer has contributed to the field as an editor and teacher. She served as the founding faculty member of the Vermont College of Fine Arts MFA program in Writing for Children and Young Adults. Bauer’s work has been recognized with several awards and honors throughout her career.

Her book On My Honor was named a Newbery Honor Book in 1987.
