Margret Rey was a German-born American writer and illustrator best known for co-creating the Curious George series with her husband, H. A. Rey. She studied art and photography at the Bauhaus in Germany and worked as a photographer and advertiser before collaborating on children’s books.
Margret and H. A. Rey fled Paris in 1940 as German forces advanced, carrying the original manuscript of what would become Curious George. The Reys eventually settled in the United States, where their first Curious George book was published by Houghton Mifflin in 1941. The series follows the adventures of a mischievous monkey and became widely popular with young readers.
Margret Rey contributed to both the writing and illustration of the Curious George books and was actively involved in their creation for decades. Her work has been translated into many languages and adapted for television and film. Curious George remains a staple in children’s literature and early childhood education.
